Therapies

The following trauma therapies are available in Sydney, Central Coast or via telehealth.

What can you expect with Somatic Therapies?

Somatic (Body Oriented) Therapy isn’t traditional ‘talk’ therapy. Your body will start to regulate itself on its own without Mihoko’s hands-on or hands-off support. Big change might not happen overnight, but you will start to notice little shifts in your nervous system.

Mihoko will always explain what the options are and then you choose what you would like to do in the session. Sometimes we will work with “imaginal touch”. “Imaginal touch” is great for starting out with touch therapy, when touch feels a little scary. This is so you can get the benefit by just imagining my hand is supporting the back of your heart, your neck, your shoulder, your kidney, or your feet. With your consent, this will change as your therapies progress and when you feel you would like to have some actual touch.

Sometimes, therapies will be held in a chair across from each other. Somatic Therapies may also be provided while lying down on a massage table, always fully clothed with your head on a pillow and lovely soft blanket keeping you warm.

Effective somatic therapy requires a long-term and consistent commitment. Somatic Therapy can be a slow process compared to other therapies you may have had. The body takes more time to heal than the mind and because of this, clients need to practice patience. By the time you come to my office you have probably been struggling for some time and patience is the last thing you have. Even so, patience is what brings results. “The slower we go, the faster results will come”.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing sessions will help you become more aware of your body and how it reacts to the feelings of trauma. The therapy will allow you to find a safe place within your mind in order to fully process the trauma. Somatic Experiencing is the result of over forty years of observation, research, and hands-on development by Dr. Levine.

Based upon the realization that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma, Somatic Experiencing has touched the lives of many thousands. SE® restores self-regulation, and returns a sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness to traumatized individuals who have had these precious gifts taken away.

We offer Somatic Experiencing in Sydney and the Central Coast. Find out more about Somatic Experiencing here.

Castellino Prenatal & Birth Therapy Foundation Training

Touch Therapy

Touch Therapy sessions are all manipulating and directing the flow of energy (Biofield) by the use of hands throughout your body. This practice is to promote healing and restore your body’s ability to heal itself.

All Touch Therapy work is done with the client fully clothed at all times.

Touch Therapy was developed by Kathy Kain, and she is now a senior trainer in the Somatic Experiencing training program as well as an adjunct faculty member of Sonoma State University. For 12 years, she was the senior trainer in the Somatic Psychotherapy training program in Sydney. Kathy Kain co-authored the book Ortho-Bionomy: A Practical Manuals.

NARM

The NeuroAffective Relational Model™ (NARM) brings the current understanding of self-regulation into clinical practice. NARM therapy will help patients identify patterns that are prohibiting them from being present to themselves or others. These could be physical, emotional, cognitive, or other mind/body feelings. NARM helps provide patients with the tools of self regulation by building on strengths..

In the NARM approach, we work simultaneously with the physiology and the psychology of individuals who have experienced developmental trauma, and focus on the interplay between issues of identity and the capacity for connection and regulation.

NARM uses four primary organising principles:

• Supporting connection and organisation

• Exploring identity

• Working in present time

• Regulating the nervous system

We offer NARM Therapy in Sydney and the Central Coast. Find out more about NARM here.

NeuroAffective Touch™

NeuroAffective Touch™ is a valuable tool that speaks the language of the body, yet invites the mind as an active partner. It uses direct contact with the skin and connective tissues and brings focus to the body’s many systems including nervous, endocrine, and circulatory. Facilitating access to feelings through this somatic conversation, it supports self-regulation and the awareness that leads to fulfilling connection with self and others.

We offer NeuroAffective Touch in Sydney and the Central Coast. Find out more about NeuroAffective Touch here.

ISP (Integral Somatic Psychology)

Integral Somatic Psychology™ (ISP™) is an approach to improve therapeutic outcomes through Western and Eastern psychology. The tools used in ISP may include awareness, intent, imagination, movement, breath, self-touch, resonance, therapist’s touch, bodywork, and energy work.

In particular, it offers methods for improving cognitive, affective, as well as behavioral outcomes in any psychological work through greater embodiment of different types of emotions through the science of the physiology of emotions and principles of energy psychology.

We offer Integral Somatic Psychology in Sydney and the Central Coast. Read more about ISP here.

Brainspotting®

A “Brainspot” is the eye position which is related to the energetic/emotional activation of a traumatic/emotionally charged issue within the brain, most likely in the amygdala, the hippocampus, or the orbitofrontal cortex of the limbic system.

During a brainspotting session, the therapist is watching for subtle reflexive signals indicating that a brainspot has been detected. The therapist then uses a pointer to guide the patient’s gaze across his or her field of vision.

Brainspotting therapy is used for:

  • Severe Trauma Resolution

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Peak Performance work

We offer Brainspotting in Sydney and the Central Coast.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a touch therapy using light touches to align the structural integrity of the body. It does not involve any spinal manipulations or adjustments. Many think that craniosacral therapy is only useful for back or chronic pain, however it actually helps target the root cause of many structural and spinal imbalances. This can restore impeded circulation, alleviate any nerve impingement and thus allow dysfunctional cells to heal themselves.

“Craniosacral Therapy believes that everyone is born with an underlying infinite order of intelligence or “vital force” energy ( often referred to as” chi” in Chinese Medicine).  This is the same intelligence that keeps your heart beating and runs your body. This constant undetectable intelligence is carried by the nervous system to every cell in your body supplying it with all the information it needs to function as planned, every day.” - http://www.craniosacraltherapy.com.au/what-is-craniosacral-therapy/

We offer Craniosacral Therapy in Sydney and the Central Coast. Read more about Craniosacral Therapy here.
